Truck Drivers Code of Conduct

The driver’s code of conduct is not a law. It’s a code of ethics professional drivers hold themselves to and others. And by following this code of ethics, you are showing other people as well as yourself, respect. It is up to you on how you conduct yourself, but keep in mind that showing other drivers respect as well as the general public, life will be happier and a bit easier.

  • Be Considerate at the fuel islands. It may be tempting, but other drivers won’t appreciate a driver parking at the pump or in front of the pump while you go inside for 20 to 30 minutes and block the fuel island. Everyone needs to get fuel, so be considerate of their time.
  • Drive in the right lane except when passing. When passing, move back to the right lane as soon as it is safe to.
  • Move over one lane to the left for emergency vehicles parked on the shoulder as well as other vehicles on the shoulder. If you are in the left lane passing, back off and let vehicles in the right lane move over.
  • When parked on the shoulder, wait until traffic clears and it is safe before moving back into the lane. Take into consideration how much time it is going to take you to get up to speed.
  • Signal other drivers who are passing you when it’s safe to move back over. Two flashes of your low beams is sufficient.
  • Dispose of your trash properly. There are trash cans at the fuel pumps as well as the parking areas in rest stops. There are trash cans everywhere. Keep America clean.
  • Stop and help other drivers if you have the skills and time. Someone may be stranded and not have cell service.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene. Nobody wants to smell that!
  • Treat police and DOT officers with respect. They are just doing their job.
  • When passing another truck and you are only going 1/2 mph faster, don’t hold up traffic. Back off until traffic clears then try again. But really, at 1/2 mph difference, there really isn’t a need to pass.
  • Help newer drivers out whenever possible. We were all new drivers once.
  • Keep a level head and don’t participate in road rage.
